Writing editor

Paste or type your text, press Check text, and every spelling, grammar and style problem is underlined with a one-click fix. The readability table under the text tells you how easy the writing is to read.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your text in the box.
  2. Press Check text. Spelling is underlined in red, grammar in blue, style in amber.
  3. Click a suggestion under the text to replace the word, or Ignore to skip it.
  4. Read the readability table at the bottom and shorten the long sentences it counts.

How it works

The editor runs three checks. Spelling uses the open-source Hunspell American English dictionary inside your browser. Grammar uses the LanguageTool engine, the same open-source rules behind several paid checkers, through its free public service. Style flags passive voice, weak adverbs, weasel words, wordy phrases and cliches with the write-good rules. The readability figures are the Flesch reading ease and Flesch-Kincaid grade formulas, which count sentence length and syllables per word.

Questions

Does it cost anything?

No. There is no word limit and no paid version. Sign in with your Google account to keep your texts and history.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. Spelling, style and readability run inside your browser. The grammar check sends the text to the LanguageTool service for the check and nothing is kept there.

Which English does it check?

American English. British spellings such as "colour" are flagged as spelling suggestions; ignore them if you write in British English.

Why does the grammar check sometimes say the service is busy?

The LanguageTool service allows about 20 checks a minute per visitor. Wait a moment and press Check text again. Spelling and style still run.

Your text stays in your browser unless you save it to your account; the grammar check sends the text to the open-source LanguageTool service and nothing is kept there. Word data comes from Datamuse and the Free Dictionary API. Built and maintained by Wordhurst.
